I am having an interested time setting up tutorial videos. I need to use free apps and after much research found camstudio, the free version of camtasia, to be a good choice. I have now downloaded Jing and love the sun at the top of the screen. It has a beautiful interface, speaking as a usability person. The video capture is not recording audio as well as Camstudio, but it looks more professional. My problem arose when I wanted to trim and convert from .avi to .mp4. I discovered that .avi takes too long to upload to YouTube over a basic internet connection. Handbrake came to my rescue - absolutely superb. I did some trimming with SolveigMM avi trimmer but have yet to investigate this facility on camstudio and handbrake. I hope this feedback gives you some info on customer requirements. Thanks for the helpful post.

I was trying to record some footsteps at home but when I put the mic to floor it picked up the hum of the fan.. Just one little mistake ruined my recording..

Ian, these tips are pretty cool. Music is a very important part of ANY kind of viewing media, from a movie trailer to a screencast. I've never done a screencast but I have seen a few on lynda.com and other tutorial sites, and even without music I can say they still convey their message.
